A beautifully figured rosewood tilt-top centre table with brass metal ornament, c.1810 POA
A very fine Regency period rosewood tilt-top centre table of excellent colour. The square top having book-matched rosewood veneers inlaid with satinwood banding and fine gilt metal edging. The whole supported by a central faceted column with finely detailed brass ornamentation. on a faceted tapering base standing on four splayed feet with finely cast bronze ornament and heavy castors.

Several ornamental timbers are referred to as rosewood, particularly the wood from various tropical trees from Brazil, Honduras, Jamaica, Africa, and India. Rosewood is a deep, ruddy brown to purplish-brown colour, richly streaked and grained with black resinous layers. It takes a fine polish but its resinous nature makes it difficult to work; in the 18th Century it was used mainly as a veneer and was much in demand by cabinet and piano makers. Nowadays, real concerns regarding the use of tropical timbers and the subsequent loss of habitat resulting from the clear felling of endangered tree species very much restricts the use of this highly decorative wood.
