A 19th Century European Revival walnut throne chair

£4,900.00

An impressive 19th Century European Revival walnut throne chair, having a curved fielded panel back and open arms with carved eagle head terminals. The front apron of the chair seat with a central carved patera balanced by triangular geometric motifs to either side. The carved zoomorphic legs terminating in lion’s paw feet.

Entirely throne-like in proportion, its status enhanced with a red velvet squab cushion, this chair is a regal representative of European Revivalism. Design sources in 18th Century decorative arts had centred on Classical and Gothic styles and motifs but throughout the 19th Century, both styles became popular, full-blown revivals, reflecting a growing interest in antiquarianism and the archaeology of the ancient world as well as that of western Europe. A romantic look back to past civilisations provided decorative arts designers, and their clients, with an escape from the harsh reality of contemporary industrialisation.
